Respect in marriage is one the most important ways to communicate love and care to your partner. It is an important predictor of marital health, builds intimacy, and evidence shows that where there is respect there is greater marital satisfaction overall. I tend to see a greater sense of “we-ness” among spouses that feel valued and respected by each other. And when respect begins to wain, contempt and anger begin to build quickly. If that isn’t dealt with, a relationship will see problems arise.
Do you and your partner work to show each respect on a daily basis? Do you feel valued by your partner on a regular basis? Do you speak to your spouse on a kind and considerate fashion? Do you each respond to each others’ needs and wants?
Think about ways you can be communicating in your marriage with more love and respect. You’ll be amazed at the difference it makes.
